Long before stuff like the Dead's American Beauty and Dylan's Basement Tapes, the Everly Brothers released rock 'n' roll's very first get-back-to-our-roots album. Released in 1958, at the height of the duo's fame, Songs Our Daddy Taught Us eschews hillbilly fever for hushed acoustic interpretations of such Appalachian classics as "Roving Gambler" and "Barbara Allen." This is stuff the Brothers used to perform as little shavers on their parents' popular radio show in the '40s and early '50s.
