Nearly Midnight, Honolulu
Upon first listen, it's Case's one-liners -- "I've been sailing so long I've become the shore," "If I puked up some sonnets would you call me a miracle?" -- that catch your ear, but after repeated listens the songs begin to reveal themselves. Of those, "Man" rocks the hardest, touched with guitar flourishes worthy of St. Vincent, but the multi-track, reverb-heavy a cappella of "Nearly Midnight, Honolulu" is even more arresting and unsettling -- a bus stop still life interrupted by a mother telling her child to "get the f*ck away." This album will make you want to smoke a cigarette.
