Imagine Bon Iver soundtracking the end of the world: That's essentially the feel of Phil Elverum's fifth album as Mount Eerie. "Misunderstood and disillusioned," he intones on opener "Through the Trees pt. 2," which starts with sparse acoustic picking evocative of a ghostly Grizzly Bear ballad. From there, he expertly laces post-rock doom and drone with Neutral Milk Hotel-like lo-fi melancholia and hints of jazz, most notably on "Lone Bell," with its grand horns and climbing bassline. It's a heady and heavy brew that leaves no room for a sigh of relief, yet is beautiful in every breath.
