Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Major, Op. 26: II. Tema con variazioni
Label: Sony Classical
The star pianist tackles some grand early 20th century repertoire here, supported by Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic. The soloist's way with Prokofiev's third piano concerto is up first; while not as romantic as many beloved interpretations (notably Martha Argerich's version), Lang's is an interesting way to hear the oft-recorded piece. The percussive quality of Bartok's concerto (Tracks 4-6) plays even more to the strength of Lang's crisp articulation. The Berliners sound in fine form, too (particularly the brass section, which carries the first movement of the Bartok).
