“Pimp, pimp! Hooray!” goes a chant on this surprise release from King Kendrick. Untitled Unmastered originates from recording sessions for the Compton rapper’s To Pimp a Butterfly. The 8-song project is in various states of completion: “Untitled 08’s” smooth synth-funk sounds polished, and could have easily fit on Butterfly, while “Untitled 07” is punctuated by tape hiss and Lamar joking around in the studio. While more an addendum than a major statement, there’s lots to enjoy here. Lamar delivers an apparent jab at Jay Electronica when he raps on “Untitled 07,” “I could never end a career if it never start.” “Untitled 06” is a fusion jazz-inflected number with a chorus from Cee-Lo, and “Untitled 05” is a warm slice of jazzy hip-hop. “I can put a rapper on life support,” warns Lamar on “Untitled 02” and adds, “guarantee that’s something none of you want.”
