Kelela is an orthodox presence when compared to the hyperkinetic anime that is FKA twigs. On Hallucinogen’s artwork, she’s cast as blue-black in a fashionable neon haze, and her songs replicate that visual. She sings her lyrics with deliberate phrasing and vocal clarity, and certain lines stand out. “Is my head in the way?,” she asks neurotically on “All the Way Down,” and then “When you look at me, you’re somewhere else” on “A Message,” predicting an eventual breakup. It’s clear she refined these songs until they shine and rise above the laptop-generated clichés that accompany them.
