Following 1969's Hot Buttered Soul, Isaac Hayes kept pushing his vision of velvety R&B outward. While he didn't best the previous LP's 18-minute-track mark, a medley of "Ike's Mood" and "You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin'" offered a quarter hour of Broadway-caliber drama, and he turned Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "The Look of Love" into an 11-minute epic of wah-wah guitars, string swells and horn charts. Hayes' stunning, emotive voice is the main attraction, but the Bar-Kays did plenty to set the faintly psychedelic tone (while providing ample material for future samplers).
