Sir Elton’s 33rd album, produced by T-Bone Burnett and co-written with Bernie Taupin, marks the first time in a decade he’s backed by the Elton John Band—which still includes drummer Nigel Olsson and guitarist Davey Johnstone from the ‘70s. The title cut and “Looking Up” are rollicking, piano-driven bounces radiating their 88s with touches of boogie-woogie, rockabilly and ragtime. “Claw Hammer” is electro-spacey blues-country comfort with a jazzy break; “Blue Wonderful” has Elton wondering at the sky, sea or maybe earth. And in “I’ve Got 2 Wings,” he plays the role of an angel who has flown away.
