Tell Me You Love Me
Label: Demi LP2 - Island/Hollywood
Already on her sixth album at 25, this pop princess has long abandoned moves age-appropriate for her initial tween demographic. EDM come-ons like the downright disco “Dirty Sexy Love,” almost electroclash “Daddy Issues,” horn-spiked “Ruin the Friendship,” and Stefflon Don-assisted deluxe-version dancehall add-on “Instruction” are most fun. But mostly she’s shooting for serious modern r&b, often busily overblown in either production (“Sorry Not Sorry,” “Cry Baby”) or Mariah-melisma (“You Don’t Do It For Anymore,” “Concentrate”) terms. Lil Wayne contributes a monotone Drake imitation to “Lonely.” And conflicted Demi can’t decide whether to apologize, or apologize for apologizing.
