Dropping The Writ
Label: Domino Recording Co
Cass McCombs sounds like he was raised in east London rather than the eastern reaches of the San Francisco Bay. His pop smarts are in their blue Monday best here, recalling Groovy Decoy-era Robyn Hitchcock, as well as Mark Kozelek's shaded atmospheres and Mazzy Star's willowy psych-folk. On "Full Moon or Infinity" he nearly out-Smiths Elliott Smith. There isn't a bad cut on Dropping the Writ, one of 2007's best albums.
