The Lost Chords Find Paolo Fresu
Bley's new small group, the Lost Chords, featuring saxophonist Andy Sheppard, debuted on her 2004 album of the same name. That same group is joined here by lyrical trumpeter Paolo Fresu. This is the first time that Bley has composed for a two-horn frontline; Sheppard and Fresu's tonal mesh on the album is luminous. The musicians successfully address the Beatles on "Four," a supple interpolation of "I Want You/She's So Heavy." The joy it brings Bley to play with this group is palpable throughout the album, and is perhaps made crystal clear when she quotes "My Favorite Things" in the final track.
