Walking On Water
Avant's R&B glides somewhere between the bedroom sensibility of urban radio and the smooth romanticism of adult-oriented quiet storm soul. It's a good way to appeal to fans of all ages, but it also risks creative inertia. On The Letter, Avant makes a handful of attempts to switch things up. One clubby offering, "That Dude," takes on Taio Cruz-styled dance pop with pleasing results, while "Nightlife" sounds like a retread of Next's "Too Close." For the most part, though, he sticks to his lovemaking repertoire, and his best numbers, like "Wake Up," bypass bland come-ons for genuine eroticism.
