Victorious boasts plenty of the '70s-inspired rock Andrew Stockdale, the group's lone original member and de facto creative force, has become synonymous with over the last decade. The title track features chugging riffs that bare teeth like barracudas as proggy, Yes-style keyboards streak across the heavens. "Gypsy Caravan," meanwhile, is prime Wolfmother: Booming psychedelic metal with Stockdale howling like a lysergic banshee. But Victorious also lobs a few curveballs that wind up revealing a different side of Stockdale, one that isn't nearly as beholden to classic rock as his critics like to claim. Wisely tapped as a single, the acoustic-based "Pretty Peggy" is a beautifully wistful meditation on lost love that is surprising in its sheer vulnerability. "Best of a Bad Situation" is another breakup jam, though this time around the band opts for a driving power-pop approach (pristine strumming, humongous hand claps, soaring harmonies) that help make it one of the record's most infectious numbers.
