Don't be fooled by the name: Ry Cuming and Frank Wiedemann's duo Howling rarely rises above the level of a whisper. Cuming is an Australian singer-songwriter with a falsetto as cracked as worn leather; Wiedemann is a member of Berlin's moody house duo Âme. Together, they make dusky indie-dance that sounds as fragile as a sigh, but also tearfully determined to persevere. The synths and guitars are as wispy as the vocals, but muted four-to-the-floor kicks push through the sadness on "Short Line" and "Howling." It doesn't get much more bittersweet than this.
