Bleeds is a spot-on title for Roots Manuva’s striver raps. He opens with “Hard Bastards,” where he communes with Britain’s underclass and raps, “You cross your heart and hope to stay alive.” Then he tests his words by “Stepping Hard” and swimming against the digital bass tide of “Facety 2:11.” On “I Know Your Face,” he hovers on the edge of death after a car crash. By the end, he asks for the right to fail on “Fighting For?,” even though he knows he’ll summon the courage to face another day. As he says on “Don’t Breathe Out,” “The poor don’t relax, the poor do funky soul clap.”
