With long hair and gnarly mustaches, the Kings of Leon depicted on the cover of Youth and Young Manhood promise boogie-fried retro jams from the '70s. But that's nothing more than subterfuge, because the actual music on this record is wiry, indie-inspired modern rock boasting a subtle garage edge. The Strokes weigh heavy on much of Youth and Young Manhood, especially on rave-ups "Happy Alone" and "Genius." At the same time, Kings of Leon are coated in a thicker grease than their big city brethren. In other words, they are way more pick-up truck than Soho art opening.
