People And Things
For his third solo effort, Andrew McMahon has musically relocated from the emo sheen and beach pop shimmer of SoCal to somewhere Midwestern (or maybe pre-Snooki Jersey). People and Things is pretty much pure American blue jean rock. Driving rhythms (perfect for running through fields); earnest guitars dancing with his usual rock piano; lyrics that name-check cities, weather patterns and love stories; sweeping melodies. Just when you wonder if it's McMahon or Mellencamp, though, he throws in a line like "You take your girlfriend to a drug deal, fall in love/ And now she wears a diamond ring."
