From desperado to smuggler, Frey embodied America's obsession with success, power and money in the 1980s. "No matter what it takes, I know I'm gonna get it done.../ I'm on my way to number one," he declares on album opener "Livin' Right" (which is "The Heat Is On, Part II," more or less). Though these lyrics seem to endorse corporate-social Darwinism, Frey displays sympathy for the proletariat and its punch-the-clock drudgery. On the piano-laced "Working Man," he busts his best Springsteen impersonation, even uttering "factory town" and "promised land" within 20 seconds of one another.
