By 1979, ELO's Jeff Lynne was smearing Bee Gees-style harmonies and electro-disco beats all over his glossy update of Beatles psychedelia. What's ironic is that the early Bee Gees themselves were masters at cribbing from the Fab Four playbook. The monster hit here is "Don't Bring Me Down," and while its stomping riffs still sound great, it's "The Diary of Horace Wimp" (a sad-little-Englishman opus) that should inflame the passions of ELO fans and music geeks -- it balances the Beatles and Bee Gees with much more originality than the album's other hit, the dated "Shine A Little Love."
