Chris Knight's grizzled Mellencamp-meets-Steve-Earle snarl is the perfect vehicle for tales of desperate down-and-outers, and the constant struggle to make ends meet. On "Nothing on Me," Knight evokes images of barroom brawls, tough blue-collar men and dogs with "don't-back-down scars." Meanwhile, "Hard Edges" paints a desolate picture of a girl who went from dancing barefoot in her yard to dancing in a strip club. Little Victories may not be the album to listen to for a pick-me-up, but it is what you'll reach for when you want to feel something.
