The band had another hit with the sumptuous tearjerker "How Do You Mend a Broken Heart," but there are many other treasures on an album rich with historical allusions, melancholy wails and eccentric orchestrations. The majestic, wrist-slashing "Don't Wanna Live Inside Myself" might as well have been the blueprint for the mope rock of Joy Division, the Cure and the Smiths.
